Solving Nigeria’s Irrigation Crisis for Farmers

The Problem

Many Nigerian farmers, particularly in semi-arid and drought-prone regions, struggle with insufficient irrigation infrastructure, making them heavily reliant on inconsistent rainfall. This lowers crop yields, reduces income, and increases food insecurity. Smallholder farmers cannot afford large irrigation systems, and government interventions have been inadequate.

The Solution

NWAPDI proposes the Irrigation for All Initiative, which will:

DEVELOP AFFORDABLE SMALL SCALE IRRIGATION SYSTEMS:

Promote low-cost solar-powered pumps and drip irrigation kits to reduce reliance on rainfall.

PROVIDE TRAINING ON WATER MANAGEMENT:

Educate farmers on efficient irrigation techniques, water conservation, and sustainable farming practices.

CREATE IRRIGATION COOPERATIVES:

Support community-managed irrigation projects where groups of farmers can collectively own and operate irrigation systems.

ADVOCATE FOR GOVERNMENT SUPPORT:

Lobby for subsidies and grants to support smallholder farmers in adopting irrigation solutions.

UTILIZE SMART TECHNOLOGY FOR WATER EFFICIENCY:

Introduce IoT-enabled irrigation systems that monitor soil moisture and automate water delivery.

ESTIMATED COST BREAKDOWN:

•  Pilot Program for Small-Scale Irrigation (36 States): $150,000~

•  Training Workshops & Farmer Education: $50,000

•  Subsidies for Solar-Powered Pumps & Drip Irrigation Kits: $200,000

•  Formation & Management of Irrigation Cooperatives: $40,000

•  Research & Development of Smart Irrigation Technologies: $60,000

Total Funding Goal: $500,000 or $13,888 per state
